Pokémon HGSS #34: Family Ties Part 2
Beatrice got her ticket punched and made her way onto the large ship, pulling her luggage behind her. She quickly took a seat on a bench, not too far from the ship’s railing.
“The S.S Aqua will be taking off in 15 minutes,” The crew announced over the speakers.

Beatrice adjusted her hat as the sea breeze kicked up salt water into the air.
It had been six months since Jonathan and her had been standing in Ilex Forest with Silver. They had managed to free both Entei and Raikou from their respective prisons and Ho-Oh seemed to be satisfied. Unfortunately Ho-Oh seemed to take off once again, leaving the Bell Tower in Ecruteak City empty. However things had calmed down once again. Team Rocket seemed to be completely gone or at least they had stopped bothering the people of the Johto Region.
Even Silver made some progress. After he defeated his father, he went to Professor Elm to apologize for stealing a Pokémon. Silver even offered to return the Pokémon he had stolen, but Professor Elm told Silver to keep it. Professor Elm told Beatrice that even though Silver had stolen the Pokémon, he could tell that Silver had formed a real bond with the Pokémon and that it would be unfair to sever that bond.
“In his own way, Silver became a genuine Pokémon trainer. He just had to do it the hard way,” Professor Elm had said to Beatrice.
After a few months of rest and relaxation in New Bark Town, Jonathan had made up his mind that he was going to pursue his goal of taking on the Elite Four. It would be a hard journey along the border of Johto and Kanto, up Victory Road but after collecting all eight badges, defeating Team Rocket, and completing Ho-Oh’s missions, he felt that the time was right.
Of course this brought up a new problem. What about Beatrice? Victory Road was a very rugged place where some of the best trainers in the region battled and trained. Jonathan insisted that she could go with him on that journey, but Beatrice knew she couldn’t go.
“This is your journey. You have to just go for it. Don’t worry about me,” Beatrice told him.
Jonathan wanted to protest but he just nodded his head.

“I love you, Bea,” He said.
“I love you too,” She said.
After Jonathan had battled his way through Victory Road, he arrived at The Indigo Plateau. Jonathan called to tell Bea everything about the journey and how strong his Pokémon had become. Then Jonathan went on to battle with each member of the Elite Four. Beatrice could sense how excited he was when he would call her, talking about his day. After each battle, he would describe how the battle went and which of his Pokémon carried him to victory.
Typhlosion and Ampharos fought hard against Will and his Psychic-Type Pokémon. Koga and his Poison-Type Pokémon were no match for the raw power of Donphan, Bruno’s Fighting-Type Pokémon crumbled to Togetic, and finally Karen’s Dark-Type Pokémon were no match for Scizor and Dragonair. Jonathan’s Pokémon were able to sweep through the Elite Four. With the elite four defeated, Jonathan had to take on the current Pokémon League Champion, Lance.
“The S.S. Aqua will depart in five minutes!”

The announcement snapped Beatrice back into reality. She then reached into her bag and pulled out her Pokégear.
She sighed as she saw that she had no new messages. Then she turned a knob and pulled up the radio app. Immediately the radio began to play.
“Well I’ll definitely be on the lookout for that Red Gyarados next time I’m at the Lake of Rage,” The man said with a laugh.
“Changing stories, we should really talk about the thrilling battle which closed out the Pokémon League,” The man continued. “Only two days ago we witnessed a battle for the ages.”
“That’s right,” A woman’s voice chimed in. “Jonathan from New Bark Town went up against the Pokemon League Champion and powerful, Dragon-Type Trainer. It was a battle that went down to the wire. But in the end Jonathan’s Typhlosion was able to carry him to victory by defeating Lance’s Dragonite.”
“This marks the first time in several years that Lance has been defeated and a new Pokémon League Champion has been crowned. The last time Lance was beaten was when Blue from Pallet Town defeated him,” The man explained.
“And remember Blue was only the champion for a short while before Red from Pallet Town took over as Champion. Of course neither Blue or Red was champion for very long. Red gave up his Pokémon Champion status and stepped away from the spotlight then. That’s when Lance retook his position as Pokémon League Champion,” The woman said.
“So what’s next for Jonathan? Will he step away like Red did?”
“I sure hope not,” The woman said with a fake laugh.
“Well good news, we actually spoke to Jonathan and he said that he has no immediate plans. He’s just happy to win such a tough fight. And he said that he was very grateful for his friends and family who helped him along the way as well as his Pokémon.”
“Seems like Jonathan’s having a wonderful time celebrating this victory,” The woman said.

“Exactly! And we wish Jonathan the best on his future endeavors,” The man said. “Now moving onto our next segment. We have some exciting news out of the Hoen region about their advancements in space exploration.”
Before Beatrice could hear all about this next story, the radio cut out and her Pokégear began to ring. A picture of Jonathan’s face came up and Beatrice answered it.
“Hello?” Beatrice said.
“Hey, it’s Jonathan,” He said.
“Don’t you mean, Pokémon League Champion?” Beatrice laughed. “I just heard all about it on the radio.”
Jonathan let out a laugh.
“The radio, huh? Didn’t know people still had those things,” Jonathan said.
“Yeah. Yeah. So how’s the whole Champion thing going anyway?” Beatrice asked.
“Oh gosh. Honestly it’s been super boring,” Jonathan said. “Don’t get me wrong, I am still in disbelief that I’m here. That I made it. But now it’s all just paperwork and responsibilities. Lots of procedures I have to follow. Things I can and can’t do in order to uphold the standard of the Pokémon League. Blah blah blah. Honestly I can see why Red left.”
“Sounds super fun,” Beatrice said.
“Yeah so much fun,” Jonathan laughed again.
“I’m proud of you, you know? And I love you,” Beatrice said.
“Love you too, Bea,” Jonathan said. “Wish you could have been there to see it.”
“Maybe I’ll catch the reruns on TV,” Beatrice said.
“Yeah that’s basically the same thing,” Jonathan laughed again. “So how are you? Are you in Kanto yet?”
That’s right. The Kanto region. See, Beatrice wasn’t content just sitting around for Jonathan to return. And she wasn’t going to join her parents, working in Professor Elm’s lab. Her journey with Jonathan around the Johto region had inspired her to take up the next leg of the journey.
“No, not yet. The boat hasn’t even left yet. I’m still in Olivine,” Beatrice said. “Apparently there was some sort of thing with a bunch of Corsola which delayed the ship. But they’re loading everyone now and I should be heading out any minute now.”
“That’s awesome. Well not the delay part. But I wish you luck on your journey. Got all your stuff? Your Pokémon?”
“Yup. Got everything I need. Including Maril, Butterfree, and Chikorita.”

“Good. Good. And Professor Oak is still meeting you right?” Jonathan asked.
“Yup. Last I spoke to him, he was going to meet me at Cinnabar Island and then we’ll make our way to his Pokémon Lab in Pallet Town,” Beatrice said.
“Wow. I just… I can’t believe that you are heading out on your own Pokémon journey. I am so excited for you. Like I’m going to miss you like crazy, but I’m so proud of you for doing this,” Jonathan said. “I can’t wait until you are calling me about your first Gym Battle. You know, if you do this thing and get all the badges, you’ll eventually have to battle me for the Championship.”
“Yeah we’ll see if you even last that long,” Beatrice said with a laugh.
“Oh I see how it is. Well don’t you worry, I’ll still be Champion until you come to challenge me,” Jonathan said.
“And then?”
“And then I guess we’ll just have to see who is the better Pokémon Trainer,” Jonathan said.
“Don’t get ahead of yourself, ok? Maybe I’ll lose to the first Gym Leader and have to come home,” Beatrice said.
“Bea, you have a Water-Type and a Grass-Type Pokémon. You could beat the first Pokémon Gym in your sleep. Plus I heard a rumor that Brock is a big softy. He might just give you the badge if you ask nicely,” Jonathan said.
“Yeah right,” Beatrice laughed.
“The S.S. Aqua is preparing to launch. Next stop Cinnabar Island,” The crew announced.
“Looks like we’re taking off,” Beatrice said. “I’ll call you once I arrive in Pallet Town.”
“Don’t worry about me, ok? Enjoy your Pokémon adventure. Call when you can,” Jonathan said.
“Alright,” Bea said, tears welling up in her eyes. “I love you.”
“I love you too, Bea,” Jonathan said.
Beatrice wiped her eyes as she closed her Pokégear, ending the call with Jonathan. She just sat back, resting against the seat. The large ship took off and began traveling across the ocean. It wasn’t long before the Johto Region was behind Beatrice and her new Pokémon journey in the Kanto region was ahead of her.
