Hello Internet!
I hope all of you are having a wonderful week! I know that this weekend marks the unofficially start to Summer to many and it’s probably National “Mow Your Grass” Weekend for your Dad. Or maybe you are the one mowing the grass and sweating in the sun. Either way Monday is Memorial Day, here in the US and I want to quickly remember all of the men and women who have served in the military and did not make it back from tours overseas. There ultimate sacrifice is something that I can’t fully comprehend, but I know that because of these wonderful people, I continue to live a life full of freedoms and privileges I wouldn’t be able to have otherwise. Now let’s talk about all the pieces that have been published on the website since the last time I posted a proper Weekly Blog. Last Wednesday, May 15th, I published a Poem titled “Academic Achievement” which celebrates all the recent graduates. No matter if you are graduating High School or College, graduation is an exciting time, so enjoy it! Then on Friday, May 17th, I published a chapter to my Dungeons and Dragons inspired series. Check out both A Knowledgeable Ally [D&D] and A Knowledgeable Ally Part 2 [D&D] to get caught up if you haven’t read them already! Last Sunday, I published a Bulletin Board Post talking about how you can Follow me on Twitter. So do that, maybe? Then finally, this past Friday, May 24th, I published an interesting Writing Prompt Piece titled “The Outbreak Is Contained, We Promise” which looks at a world where the zombie apocalypse was quickly stopped and how some people would have a hard time coming back to their normal lives. So that’s all of the most recent pieces. If you haven’t read any of them or are new to my website/blog, that’s a good place to start if you want to read more of the stuff I’ve written.
Now let’s talk about the other massive thing that happened last week. That’s right a huge show with a massive following. You know what I’m talking about. Let’s say together on 3. 1….2…3…. Big Bang Theory. That’s right. The Big Bang Theory came to an end. Aren’t we all sad about it? No, but seriously, Game of Thrones came to an end last Sunday and let’s just say that it was the divisive show finale that was the icing on top of a divisive season cake. I just have to say that I actually haven’t watched any of Game of Thrones but my brother was very excited to watch the final season of the show and he was very disappointed with the season as a whole. Plus if you follow any Game of Thrones fans on any social medium platform, you can just see that people were not happy with this season. Some people may point out to some high points, but I think the general consensus is that the season was rushed, too much was squeezed into one season, the writing was sub par, and a lot of things were built up to, but didn’t have a satisfying conclusion. I mean, what was up with Jon Snow not petting his dog? I didn’t watch the show but even I know Ghost is the Bestest Boy and he should be king. So yeah, Game of Thrones ended with controversy and fans are mad about. But that happens a lot. Shows sometimes have a lot of hype going into the final season or final episode, but cannot stick the landing. For me, the prime example of this is How I Met Your Mother.
If you don’t remember How I Met Your Mother or never saw it, I’ll give you a quick summary of the show. Basically How I Met Your Mother is a CBS Sitcom about a bunch of friends who live and work in New York City. The main character is Ted Mosby, played by Josh Radnor, and he is basically recounting the story of how he met the children’s mother (who he is telling the story to.) It also stars Alyson Hannigan and Jason Stiegel as Lilly Aldrin and Marshal Eriksen, Colbie Smulders as Robin Scherbatsky, and Neil Patrick Harris as Barney Stinson. The entire show they are building to who this mysterious mother figure is as Ted falls in and out of love with different women including Robin several times. The last season sees the group preparing for Barney and Robin’s wedding which is the backdrop for the entire season. Ted thinks he might still have feelings for Robin, but he ends up keeping these feelings secret as the wedding proceeds as usual (aside from some sitcom hijinks). Now it’s the last episode. The episode where we finally get to see Ted meet the mother and bring a satisfying conclusion to the show. And the episode starts out great. Ted and The Mother (AKA Tracy McConnell played by Cristin Milioti) and we see them fall in love. It’s wonderful.
Then the last ten minutes happen. Oh man. It was a mess. Robin and Barney split up after the entire season led up to the wedding and The Mother dies from a terminal illness. Then Ted’s kids tell Ted that he’s obviously still in love with Robin and that they should be together. So what does Ted do? He tracks down Robin and confesses his love to her. The whole show is about Ted meeting the Mother and they kill her off so that he can try to be with Robin which is a relationship that has ended poorly several times in the show’s past. Let me just say that I was not happy with that ending and fans even petitioned the show runners to cut the last 10 minutes of the episode so that it just ends with Ted and The Mother living happily ever after together. Some people liked the original ending which I guess makes the ending controversial. I did not like it for many of the same reasons that some people did not like this last season of Game of Thrones. It seemed like they were building to something and then seemed to toss it all out at the last minute when there was a clear path they could follow. Ghost should have been King and Ted should not be with Robin. It’s that simple.
So if you’re still in shock over the ending of Game of Thrones or are still mad over the ending of How I Met Your Mother, you might be asking yourself if there is a show that actually nails the ending and satisfies the audience. Well put down that DVD of Dexter and pick up the box collection of Avatar: The Last Airbender. Seriously, the Nickelodeon Cartoon is an amazingly written show with real character development which ended on a satisfying note. It built up this world with dynamic characters and a great premise and marched its main characters on a path to fight the ultimate bad guy, and it delivers. Now I know this show is over a decade old now (man, I’m old), but I don’t want to say too much just in case someone out there hasn’t seen it and wants to watch it. Seriously, it is worth it! Yes it is a cartoon, but it’s art style is very Western Anime and the writing is really good. It has its moments of laughter as well as its very serious moments and moments that will make you cry. Plus it’s very quotable and afterwards, you’ll wish you could bend the elements of air, fire, water, and earth. Also if we are talking about shows with satisfying endings, I have to give a shout out to Breaking Bad. Seriously, if you have not watched Breaking Bad, you need to finish this Weekly Blog and then start watching Breaking Bad. Plus it’s probably a little bit more in line with people who watched Game of Thrones. This show, where a Science Teacher starts selling Meth to pay off his medical bills, has way too many amazing moments to name them all, but the writing in this show is amazing from start to finish. There are still some episodes that haunt my mind to this day and quotes that send shivers down my spine. This show also has a satisfying ending which really pulls out all the stops. Plus the acting from Bryan Cranston, who plays the main character Walter White, and Aaron Paul as Jesse Pinkman are out of this world. I cannot recommend the show enough. So what are you waiting for? Wash the bad endings from your brains with some great Television Shows with fantastic endings!

I remember feeling really weird at the end of How I Met Your Mother. I had spent so much time watching, I kind of felt betrayed
